Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
